SRI LANKA-Sri Lanka Army advanced its forward defence lines in Muhamalai to Kilali by 500 meters after a fierce battle to day. At least 52 LTTE cadres were reportedly killed and 15 soldiers were killed and 74 injured reported said.

India should pressurise Sri Lanka to declare ceasefire: Vaiko

India should pressurise Sri Lanka to declare a ceasefire and ensure food supplies to the suffering Tamils there, MDMK leader Vaiko said on Monday.

It is for Colombo to declare a ceasefire as the LTTE had announced unilateral truce for 30 days and extended it by another 30 days, he told reporters after meeting External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee here.

The MDMK leader alleged the Sri Lankan government has launched a "misinformation" campaign about large scale killing of LTTE cadres.

Alleging that abduction and killing of innocent Tamils has become the order of the day in military operations, he said India should ensure supply of food and medicines to the suffering Tamils through International Red Cross.

Vaiko said he apprised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the situation earlier.The Hindu

One hundred and forty five dengue cases


SRI LANKA- One hundred and forty five dengue cases have been reported from Colombo this year, the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Colombo, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said.

"Patients are reported from densely populated areas and especially in and around new construction sites where water finds its way into pits, lift shafts, holes or crevices on uncovered floors. One large construction site in Havelock Town has reported more than 15 dengue patients with one death, a foreigner. Most other major construction sites in Narahenpita, Bambalapitiya and Wellawatte had earlier reported dengue cases among workers or newly arrived residents," he said.

The lack of care by owners and site managers to improve sanitary conditions including disposal of garbage, drainage of storm water, and inspection of the site for mosquito breeding during the construction period has contributed to the creation of pockets of dengue cases in and around these sites. dailynews

Sri Lanka politician Jeyaraj dead


SRI LANKA-Sri Lanka great politician and Road and Highway Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was killed following the blast in Welliweriya this morning. The blast occurred when he was about to flag off a marathon run as part of a Sinhala New Year celebration event. About 12 dead and 83 injured in this incident police said.

Sri Lanka’s ace marathon runner K.A. Karunaratne and National Athletic coach Lakshaman De Alwis are also among those killed in the Weliweriya bomb blast this morning. Karu represented Sri Lanka at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

Lanka rejects war crimes allegations

* Rights minister says govt wants ‘perpetrators of crimes identified and dealt with’

SRI LANKA- Sri Lanka’s government on Thursday defended itself against fresh allegations it was involved in a cover-up over the massacre of ethnic-Tamil employees of a French charity.

The island’s human rights minister, Mahinda Samarasinghe, said Colombo was determined to “show results” from its probe into the murders and a string of other cases, rejecting allegations the government wanted to bury the crimes. 

Dealing with perpetrators: “I am as desperate as anyone else to show results,” he told reporters, adding that each case was “complex” but that the government still wanted to see that “the perpetrators of these crimes are identified and dealt with.” He did not say when he expected the cases to be concluded.....

Senior Rupavahini producer flees country to save life


SRI LANKA-Fearing for the safety of his life, Waruna Lelwala, a Senior Programme Producer at state-owned Rupavahini Corporation has fled the country, reports said.
Mr. Lelwala, one of the 21 SLRC employees blacklisted by the Criminal Investigation Department for investigation after the infamous Minister Mervyn Silva episode, left the country in the early hours of yesterday (Apr. 02nd).
  
Fears for life intensified after an unidentified group attempted to gain entry to the mediaman’s house on two difference occasions in recent days, a spokesman for the SLRC trade unions alliance told ‘Lanka Dissent.’
The senior Programme Producer had been serving at Rupavahini since 1991.
Threats to his life was just one instance of assault, intimidation and harassment of SLRC staff after Mr. Mervyn Silva stormed the corporation and assaulted its News Director in late December.
Three Rupavahini employees narrowly escaped grievous harm to their lives from attacks by groups of thugs, while attempts to intimidate two others failed.-www.freemediasrilanka.org
