Senior editor of Tamil newspaper stabbed in Sri Lanka
The associate editor of a state-run Tamil language newspaper, The Thinakaran, was stabbed and injured in Sri Lanka's capital late Monday, police said.
T. Mohamed Suhaib was dragged from his home at Maligawatte in Colombo by five unidentified men and stabbed, causing serious injury. He was operated upon at the national hospital.
Police said the motive of the attack was not known immediately, but he had been threatened earlier by a supporter of a Muslim politician over a report published in his newspaper.
The attack came two days after a journalist attached to the state-run Rupavahini television was stabbed by two unidentified men and seriously injured in the outskirts of Colombo.
The journalist, Lal Kumara Mahawalage, had recently criticised a ruling party minister who then assaulted the television station's news director for failing to broadcast a speech made by the minister.

Bodies found in Sri Lanka forest-BBC
Sri Lanka-Sixteen bodies have been found at a remote jungle location in government-controlled territory in Sri Lanka's Anuradhapura district.
One of the bodies was female, the rest male. Some were found with their hands bound behind their backs.
They were discovered in a decomposed state, in two separate grave sites.
Military spokesman Brig Udaya Nanayakkara said a forensics team was on its way to Kabithigollewa village, 275km (170 miles) north of Colombo.
He said he could not comment further until the team had reported from the location on Friday.
Heightened hostilities
Local villagers told the BBC the bodies were found after farmers went in search of cattle that had strayed from the pack.
They found tyre tracks in the earth and followed them, fearing their animals had been carried away in vehicles.
This led to the discovery of two freshly-dug mounds of earth in the forest, containing the bodies.
Hostilities have heightened between Sri Lanka's government and Tamil Tiger rebels over the past two years.
The government announced last week that it was formally withdrawing from a truce deal that rising violence had already effectively ended.
The Tigers control a swathe of territory in the north of the island and are determined to fight for an independent state

Air attack to the "X-ray base"
Sri Lanka air force fighter jets have raided the terror hub in Kilinochchi, known as "X-ray base" around 11.15, this morning (January 23). Air Force fighter jets in a low flying mission have targeted the base located East of Iranamadu Tank in the Kalmadukulama area, with the pin point accuracy, air force sources said.
According to Air Force Spokesperson Wing Commander Andi Wijesoriya, the air sorties were carried out on information obtained through real-time air surveillance and ground reconnaissance. Also, he said that the targeted location has been a regular visiting place of terror chief V. Prabhakaran. Fighter pilots have confirmed that the target was accurately hit , he added
Defence intelligence sources said that the air raid was timed with a "special" activity that was going on at the LTTE base. However, the sources refrained from commenting further on the issue. Also, the sources said, the targeted terror hub was located in a thick jungle patch, North of LTTE's "runaway" in Iranamadu. The area has been long demarcated as a "high security zone" and a "no go' area for civilians, the sources added.
LTTE is a ruthless terrorist outfit that has been fighting for a mono ethnic separate homeland for Tamils in Sri Lanka since 1983. Last week, LTTE terrorists butchered 47 people in the Monaragala and Thanamalwila areas at the behest of their psychopathic leader V.Prabhakaran.

I don't believe in a military solution.
President Rajapaksa.
Sri Lanka-Sri Lanka's president Tuesday signalled a shift in the war against the Tamil Tigers, saying he does not believe that the decades-old conflict can be solved through military means. President Mahinda Rajapakse defended his decision to withdraw from a tattered 2002 truce with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and said negotiations would not be possible until the rebels ended attacks on civilians repoted AFP.
But he suggested that the separatist rebels may not have been behind a string of recent bombings on the tropical South Asian island, pointing instead at the possible involvement of political and business interests. "We will hit if we are hit," Rajapakse told reporters. "The recent operations in the north are not aimed at advancing... I don't believe in a military solution," he said.

"There is no direct support,"
Indian Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta
Reported by- The Time of India
NEW DELHI: A day after Colombo praised the Indian Navy for its help in countering LTTE, India on Wednesday said it was just conducting "coordinated patrolling" with the Sri Lankan Navy along the IMBL (international maritime boundary line) as part of the move to bolster its own coastal security.
"There is no direct support," said Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta. The Indian Navy patrols and guards its own waters in the wake of the ever-increasing threat terrorism from the sea. If this helps Sri Lanka, so be it, he added.
India, of course, is already supplying Sri Lanka with a wide array of military equipment, which also includes new low-flying detection radars in addition to the ones given earlier. The process actually began with the transfer of a Sukanya-class offshore patrol vessel in 2002, with the primary aim of countering Pakistan and China's inroads into the island nation.
Sri Lanka, in fact, recently provided a long list of "urgent military requirements" to India, which ranges from air defence weapons, artillery guns, Nishant UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) to more radars and even laser designators for PGMs (precision-guided munitions).
But the UPA government has to keep in mind domestic political compulsions, with heightened political sensitivities in Tamil Nadu, before drastically stepping up the transfer of "offensive military capabilities" to Sri Lanka.
India obviously does not want to be directly sucked into Sri Lanka's never-ending ethnic strife after the IPKF fiasco of the late-1980s. But since last year after the interception of an LTTE explosive-laden boat near the Tamil Nadu coast, India has stepped up naval patrolling in Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar by deploying more warships under 'Operation Tasha'.
The audacious LTTE air strikes against Sri Lankan bases in March-April last year also led the Indian security forces to quickly put in place a "multi-layered surveillance and radar network" along the coast, with the Navy even deploying its Israeli UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) for reconnaissance missions.

Special Issue, from The Hindu:
LTTE most dangerous extremist outfit: FBI
New York (PTI): Describing the LTTE as the "most dangerous and deadly extremist" outfit in the world, the FBI has asked donors to be careful about charities established as front organisations by the rebel group to raise funds to finance its terrorist activities.
The group, FBI said, has placed operatives right in the United States to discreetly raise money to purchase weapons and explosives and to fund its "terrorist campaign" in Sri Lanka.
LTTE has "quite a resume" as a terrorist group which is credited with perfecting the use of suicide bombers, inventing suicide belts and pioneering the use of women in suicide attacks, the top investigating agency said.
The rebel group's "ruthless tactics" has inspired terrorist networks worldwide, including al Qaeda in Iraq, it added.
Stating that LTTE has killed some 4,000 people in its campaign of "violence and bloodshed" in the last two years, FBI said its operatives have assassinated two world leaders, "the only terrorist organization to do so."
The FBI did not mention the names but LTTE is known to be behind the assassinations of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa in 1993.
The FBI warning comes within days of the Sri Lankan government abrogating a ceasefire agreement with LTTE amidst fears that the conflict could escalate in coming days.
In its campaign to seize control of the country from the Sinhalese ethnic majority and create an independent Tamil state, FBI said, the LTTE has launched suicide attacks, assassinated politicians and committed all kinds of crimes to finance its operations.
