LTTE suspected of looting UN offices


SRI LANKA-The United Nations said yesterday its offices in the north had been looted after aid workers were evacuated last week.
A statement from the UN said it suspected the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were involved in the theft from buildings it had left on the orders of the Government. The UN did not disclose what was stolen, but local media reported that the suspected Tigers took large stocks of fuel and electricity generators.
"The UN has drawn this to the attention of the LTTE and says that humanitarian assets and staff ought to be protected at all times in accordance with international humanitarian law," the statement said.

Chief Priest of Koneshwaram Kovil shot dead

SRI LANKA-LTTE gunmen yesterday (Sept 21) shot dead the Chief Priest of the historic Koneshwaram Kovil of Trincomalee.
Shiv Shri Kugaraja Kurukkal, aged 43, was killed around 6 p.m. while riding his motorcycle in Trincomalee by gunmen who came on a motorcycle. The priest maintained a close rapport with the Security Forces which may have led to the shooting, military sources said. Police found two bullet wounds on his face and skull.
The shooting took place along Viththiyalayam Road. The world famous Koneshvaram Temple is located inside Trincomalee's Fort Frederick. He had been the chief priest of the Temple for the last five years and had returned to Sri Lanka after a short visit to India a few days ago.
