Fishermen issue: India, Lanka agree on practical arrangements
New Delhi - In the wake of India's concern over harassment and killing of its fishermen in maritime waters with Sri Lanka, New Delhi and Colombo on Sunday decided to put in place practical arrangements to address the issue. As per the arrangements, Sri Lanka will identify "sensitive areas" in its maritime waters which should be avoided by Indian fishermen, who would have to carry I-cards issued by the Tamil Nadu government and their vessels should possess permits.
India took up the issue of harassment and killing of its fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy during the meetings President Mahinda Rajapaksa's Special Adviser Basil Rajapaksa had with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, National Security Adviser and Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon here.
